If you struggle with chronic sinus congestion, your ENT specialist might determine that balloon sinuplasty (also called balloon sinus dilation) could help you. This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of a balloon catheter to widen the sinus passages and improve breathing. It is usually performed in-office and produces significant results for most patients. Still, before you commit to it, you might wonder what the recovery is like! Thankfully, it is easy for most patients. This blog post gives you a preview of what to expect.
Immediately After Your Procedure
Balloon sinuplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia, which will not affect your ability to make good decisions and react quickly. Therefore, you may choose to drive yourself home after your appointment.
Plan on resting for the remainder of the day after your procedure. You may feel congestion and pressure in your sinuses, and a small amount of bloody discharge may come out. Avoid blowing your nose, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed. Try to avoid sneezing, but if you do have to sneeze, do so with your mouth open. Keep your head elevated to minimize swelling and pressure.
The First Week
Congestion, minor drainage, and sensations of pressure may go on for several days. However, swelling should continue to decrease. You can go back to work when you feel up to it; most patients feel good enough to go back within 24 – 48 hours. If you have a job that demands a lot of physical activity, wait at least a week to return; vigorous physical exertion can slow down your healing process and cause additional irritation.
Full Recovery
Most patients are well recovered within 1 – 3 weeks. During this time, you should notice that your breathing becomes easier, your sinuses drain more easily, and you feel much more comfortable overall.
When to Ask for Help
If you follow post-op instructions from your doctor, your recovery should be easy and smooth. However, you should still keep an eye on yourself and reach out for help if you notice unusual symptoms, such as heavy bleeding, a high fever, thick, foul-smelling discharge, or anything else that makes you feel concerned. Your ENT specialist can evaluate the problem and help you determine what should be done next.
Recovering from balloon sinuplasty is much easier than bouncing back from more invasive procedures! Talk to your doctor to learn more about what you can expect after your procedure.
