The term “nose job” is often used to refer to any surgical procedure that affects the nose. However, it can create some confusion. There are actually a few different surgeries that can be used to enhance the shape and/or function of the nose, including septoplasty and rhinoplasty. What is the difference between these two procedures, and how can you determine which one is right for you? This blog post provides valuable information.

Defining Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to correct a deviated or malformed septum, which is the cartilage and bone that separates the two nostrils. If your septum is crooked, it may cause difficulty breathing, frequent nosebleeds, or recurring sinus infections. Septoplasty focuses on improving nasal function by straightening the septum and restoring proper airflow through your nose. This procedure does not usually change the external appearance of the nose, but it could significantly improve your quality of life.

Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is designed to alter the shape, size, and/or appearance of your nose. Many people choose rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons, such as refining a nasal bump, narrowing the nostrils, or changing the angle of the tip. Rhinoplasty can also address functional issues, including birth defects or injuries, but its primary focus is on aesthetics. The procedure involves reshaping bone, cartilage, and soft tissue to achieve your desired look.

Which Is Right for You?

Choosing between septoplasty and rhinoplasty depends on your goals and needs. If you have trouble breathing or suffer from persistent nasal symptoms, septoplasty may be the best option to address the underlying structural problems in your nose. Your surgeon will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine whether a deviated septum is causing your issues.

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose or wish to make cosmetic changes, you may want to consider rhinoplasty. A skilled plastic surgeon can help you develop a personalized plan that aligns with your aesthetic preferences.

Can Septoplasty and Rhinoplasty be Combined?

If you wish to improve both the function and appearance of your nose, you may benefit from both procedures! Often, septoplasty and rhinoplasty can be performed together in a single surgery. This combined approach is called septorhinoplasty, and it can be much more efficient than having septoplasty and rhinoplasty performed at separate times.

Are you considering nose surgery? Ask your facial plastic surgeon about which procedure would be best for your unique circumstances.
