What Is Balloon Sinus Dilation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During balloon sinus dilation, a specialized catheter with a small balloon on its tip is gently inserted into the affected sinus passage. The balloon is then inflated, expanding and reshaping the sinus opening to allow for improved drainage and airflow. Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinus dilation does not require cutting or removal of bone or tissue, which means less trauma and a quicker recovery. The procedure is typically performed in an outpatient setting and usually takes less than an hour to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patients are usually awake during balloon sinus dilation and receive local anesthesia to make the process as easy as possible. Because the procedure does not involve extensive surgical techniques, the risk of complications is low, and most people can return to their normal activities within a day or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does the Procedure Feel Like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Local anesthesia will prevent you from feeling any pain during your procedure. However, you may notice a sensation of pressure or fullness in your sinuses as the balloon inflates. The feeling is often described as similar to the pressure experienced during a sinus infection, but it does not last long. The balloon is deflated and removed once the sinus passage has been widened, and any discomfort quickly subsides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the treatment, you might experience mild tenderness or a stuffy feeling in your nose, which typically resolves within a few days. There is little to no bleeding, and most people do not require prescription pain medication. You can expect to resume normal activities soon after the procedure, and you should notice improved breathing and reduced symptoms as your sinuses heal.
